UNIVERSITY SPORTS COUNCIL

The Sport Council was inaugurated at the inception of the University. It’s been headed by Oliyide Olusina an Exercise Physiologist. Presently Acting Director of Sports Foluso Onagoruwa is a Sport Psychologist who had first and second degree in Physical Education. There are 2 other coaches both professionally certified by Nigeria Institute of Sports.

There are 2 divisions vis: Coaching and Grounds & Facilities The coaching unit handles the training and sports organisation for both staff and students. It is manned by Mr. Onagoruwa a Sport Psychologist, Mr John Odulaja and Mrs Adebayo Yemisi both Sports Administrators. The Grounds and Facilities unit is manned by Mr. Jaiyesimi Seun, The Council also has a secretarial staff Mrs Omoseni Fatimat who handles the office administration.

Presently, the council is been led by the Chairman Professor Banjo Modupe, the head of sports, Mr. Odulaja John and comprises four qualified coaches from National institutes for sport (NIS), who train and develop the students performances, Coach Kareem Temitope Saheed (Soccer), coach Olaniyi Olawale Saheed (Athletics), coach Abdurraheem Saeed Muhammad (Taekwondo) and coach Kareem Modupe Ruth (Volleyball).

The University exposes the students to recreational and competitive sports in Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Chess, Handball, Soccer, Volleyball, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, Cricket, Hockey.

The University has participated in 4 NUGA games – 2007 UNIMAID (observation status), 2009 UNN, 2011 UNIBEN, 2014 OAU, 2017 University of Makurdi, 2022 UNILAG and won laurels in all. The school also participated in Gateway tertiary institution games, 2005 Abeokuta, 2007 Ijebu ode, 2010 Abeokuta, 2022 Abeokuta, 2023 Sagamu, 2024 Ijebu Ode and also won laurels in all. Also staffs are not left out of competitions and games, participated in Nigerian university staff games (NUSSA), 2016 Kaduna, 2018 Ilorin, they also won laurels in the events.

The Sports Council is presently at the fore front of encouraging young school leavers to combine top sporting activities hence we have some athletes who have competed in the National colour. Some of these students are: Nathaniel Glory (Athletics), Amusan Oluwatobi (Athletics), Faluyi Ololade (Hockey), Sanusi Ololade (Taekwondo), Ademola Adebambo and Saheed Lasisi (Nigeria professional football league), The Sports Council is poised for greater heights in the coming days. Presently 2 of the athletes Oluwaseyi Peace Abodunrin and Abdulrahman Hawawu got scholarship to study and continue their sport career in Qatar and Bahrain respectively.

The university won gold medal in crickets and bronze in handball, NUGA 2009, silver in hockey, bronze in basketball and Athletics, NUGA 2011, bronze in taekwondo NUGA 2014, gold in athletics and taekwondo, and 2 silver in athletics, NUGA 2017, silver in athletics, NUGA 2022.

The school has been more outstanding at the gateway tertiary institution games (GATIG), 2005, overall 3rd position, 2007, overall 2nd position, 2010, overall 2nd position, 2002, overall 1st position, 2023, overall 1st position and 2024 overall 1st position.
