UNIVERSITY DON CALLS FOR REVIEW OF GENDER DISCRIMINATORY LAWS IN NIGERIA
An erudite Nigerian Scholar, Prof Eunice Modupe Hassan, has called for the reveiw of Gender discriminatory laws which still exist in the pages of the Nation’s statute books in order to demonstrate her total commitment to eradicating gender inequality in Nigeria.
Prof. Hassan made the call recently while delivering the fifth inaugural lecture of the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ogun State,titled,” Counselling for Harmony in workplace:Resolving Gender Discrimination issues in the world of work “.
The Professor of Counselling Psychology,opined that every person in Nigeria ,irrespective of their gender should be given equal opportunity to excel in his or her chosen field.
While noting the need for the establishment of more Gender monitoring agencies by the Nigerian government, especially at the grassroots level for an effective monitoring and reporting of gender rights violations against the female gender in Nigeria,Prof Hassan urged women to be more proactive in all spheres of life.
” Workplace counselling should be given to women that are _disenchanted_ and discouraged because of gender discrimination so as to motivate them for better productivity “,she noted.
In his welcome address,the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu observed that women have over the years surmounted pyramid of challenges to excel in various fields of careers.
He encouraged women still held back by their fears of discrimination to be bold and join forces in advocacy for harmony in workplace to achieve equal outcome for men and women.
The ceremony had in attendance, members of the University Management Team, the Academia, friends and relatives of the celebrant and the entire University community.
