The Childhood Education option of the department has as its focus the Education of teachers who would be better qualified to handle children in their formulative ages. Since pre-primary and primary schools are still the foundation upon which solid and challenging structures are erected, there is the need to pay serious attention to this level of the system, if the entire educational structure is to remain formidable. Hence, Childhood Education programme aims at equipping teachers with the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them teach effectively all subjects in the pre-primary and primary school curricula as contained in the National Policy on Education.The pre-primary and primary school teachers should, be adequately qualified, competent, highly motivated, conscientious and efficient and thus, be able to enhance the image of the teaching profession. The objectives of the Childhood Education Option are to:
i. teach effectively all subjects in the Nigerian pre-primary and primary schools curricular
ii. manifest desirable leadership skills and supervisory role in pre-primary and primary schools
iii. participate effectively in curricula development and implementation in pre-primary and primary schools
iv. initiate and participate effectively in community development
v. pursue further studies in related disciplines.
