In a recent address, the newly invested 13th President of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering and the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Prof. Rahamon Adisa Bello, FAEng, has raised alarm over the critical shortage of skilled technicians and artisans in Nigeria. This deficit, he argues, is hindering the country’s technological development.
Speaking at the 2024 Annual Lecture, where he was invested as the new President of the Academy, Prof. Bello urged the government at all levels to take immediate action to reverse this trend.
He revealed that the Academy of Science has initiated a policy to refocus attention on the development of technical and vocational education and skills.
“The promotion of engineering business will see the nation back on its feet,” Prof. Bello stated. He emphasized that the manufacturing sector in Nigeria is at its lowest ebb and called for concerted efforts from stakeholders to aggressively promote engineering businesses. This, he believes, is crucial for revitalizing Nigeria’s struggling economy.
The new President stressed the importance of bringing all aspects of engineering factors of production in manufacturing back to the forefront. He also urged the government to utilize the expertise available within the Academy and other professional bodies.
In his acceptance speech, Prof. Bello pledged to uphold the ideals of the Academy and elevate its status during his tenure. He emphasized the need for advocacy and policy briefs to encourage governments and stakeholders to tap into the potential within the Academy.
The immediate past President, Prof. Azikiwe Peter Onwualu, FAEng, congratulated Prof. Bello and assured him of support from past presidents. Prof. Onwualu also addressed national challenges, including rising food prices, energy issues, insecurity, and infrastructural deficiencies. He advised the government to address the mass exodus of professionals and youth, create more employment opportunities, and combat corruption.
The event also saw the induction of 13 senior Engineers as Fellows of the Academy. Notable attendees included university officials and distinguished guests from various sectors.
